Review: A Shadow of Light by Bella Forrest

A Shadow of Light (A Shade of Vampire, #4)A Shadow of Light by Bella Forrest
Release Date: July 31, 2013
Format: eARC, 270 pages
Series: A Shade of Vampire #4
Source: Author in exchange for an honest review

Description from Goodreads:
Since the implosion at The Oasis and Derek's stay at Hawk Headquarters, The Shade has fallen into a state of utter chaos. To make matters worse, the citizens of Derek's kingdom have become suspicious of his loyalties and accuse him of siding with the enemy... At a time when Derek desperately needs full cooperation from his subjects, they wish to put their own King on trial.

Meanwhile, Sofia is being held hostage by the hunters. They are determined to rid her of her infatuation with the vampire. She submits to the strict routine and training they impose on her, but the only fuel that keeps her going is the thought of reuniting with Derek - something Reuben is fighting with every fiber of his being to ensure will never happen.

...Until one day, out of the blue, Reuben appears to have a change of heart and comes to Sofia with a proposal; a solution that she never dreamed possible. A solution that would fulfil her heart's deepest desires and secure her and Derek's future together, forever.

But can she really trust this man who is so renowned for his hatred of vampires? Does she even have a choice?

Since I jumped right into this one after finishing A Castle of Sand, I didn't really have to read much to get back into the book. I was IN from the very first page. Yet again, Bella Forrest has added to one of my favorite vampire series in a way that I never saw coming--and I LOVED it.

Picking up right where the last book left off yet again (Bella always does this, which is something I definitely like), we get into what is going on pretty quickly. I was surprised again by where this story went, and it was so fun to read. It was nice to have some time in the Shade and at Hawk Headquarters, but it was also nice that we didn't spend too much time where I didn't want to be. So basically, this story isn't what I expected it to be, but it's even better than I could have thought up myself.

The mystery that is Sofia continues to reveal itself, and as time goes on I like this girl more and more. She truly is a great MC, and I don't really mind spending time in her head. And Derek...he continues to redeem himself to me. I definitely like him more now than I did in book 3. My love for him grows and grows. I have a bad feeling, though...about the next book...but we'll see. I am soooo not counting those chickens before they hatch, because goodness knows Bella Forrest very well may turn everything COMPLETELY AROUND in no time at all. So for now, I'm loving these characters.

I didn't get much of a chance to get bored in this one--then again, I can't remember being bored with any of these books since the very beginning of book 2. From there on out, this series has been on the freaking ball, and I heart them. This series is seriously so addicting, I can't even.

The ending to this one had me starting the next one right away. Seriously, I'm pretty far into the next one now. And I just finished this book yesterday. Restraint? Ha! I have none. These books rock.

Overall, Bella Forrest has written another fabulous story to be added to a series that I love dearly. How she does it, I don't know, but her take on vampires is always riveting and just feels so RIGHT. Goodness, I love it!

Review: A Castle of Sand by Bella Forrest

A Castle of Sand (A Shade of Vampire, #3)A Castle of Sand by Bella Forrest
Release Date: June 26, 2013
Format: eARC, 296 pages
Series: A Shade of Vampire #3
Source: Author in exchange for an honest review

Description from Goodreads:
What Sofia has with Derek feels like a sandcastle; temporary and something that the waves of life and time will soon ruin...

Since the return of Gregor Novak, the island has turned several shades darker. His hatred toward Sofia and thirst for fresh blood lead to a brutal war igniting between father and son.

Meanwhile, the hunters are gaining formidable strength and resources by the day; they know that the safety of The Shade hangs entirely on its ability to remain hidden from them.

And a sinister secret lies in wait for Sofia within the bowls of an Egyptian desert... a secret that threatens to crush her sandcastle much sooner than she could have expected.

Honestly, it took me a little bit of reading in the beginning of this book to get back IN to the series. But once I got back in? Goodness, I was HOOKED. Bella Forrest  writes the most compelling vampire stories. This one picks up right where A Shade of Blood left off, catching us up with Derek and Sofia and everyone else pretty easily.

These characters are great. Sofia...well, she does seem like a special snowflake, but she also earns her status. I like how she can be calm in situations I know I would personally be FREAKING OUT. And she really is kind. Add that stuff to the fact that she is one big mystery--WHY is she so important, what is up with her, WHAT is going on?!?!--and that makes for a character that may not be my favorite but definitely hold my attention. And Derek...I don't know what to do with this guy. I feel for him so much. My heart hurts. He was much better behaved in this one than he was in book 2, so that made me happy. But he's still not perfect. Then again, that's what makes his character feel so real. Imperfections always help to make characters feel more real, in my opinion. I heart Derek. He's not my favoritest ever, but I think he can definitely end up being one of the book boys I cherish once he and Sofia finally get through the big mess they're currently dealing with.

Throughout the whole book, there's the idea of a sandcastle and how they always get swept away by nature. That's just how it goes; it's inevitable. I really liked how this idea held throughout the story. It didn't feel like too much to me at all. It just WAS and I enjoyed that. Plus, it was kind of deep.

Oh, and Ben. Oh, goodness Ben. BEN BEN BEN. My boy Ben. Sigh.

The course this story takes is waaaaay far from what I ever could have imagined. Right when I think the story's going one way and the characters are going to do one thing, they do something I NEVER could have expected. I kind of love it, though. I love not being able to predict what comes next. It's not so much that I have no idea what is happening; it's just enough that I don't really ever get bored.

The ending to this one is just like we've come to expect from Bella--a big BOOM that left me wanting more. So much more.

Overall, this was an awesome addition to a series I grow to love more and more with each installment. Bella Forrest writes the most addicting stories, y'all. And she does vampires soooo well. Yeah, I'm wanting the next book NOW.

Panic by J.A. Huss Blog Tour (Review & Giveaway!)

Panic by J.A. Huss
Panic (Rook and Ronin, #3)
Release Date: October 15, 2013
Format: eARC, 232 pages
Publisher: Science Future Press
Series: Rook and Ronin #3
Source: Xpresso Book Tours in exchange for an honest review
Buy It: Amazon | B&N | Kobo

Description from Goodreads:
Rook is chasing her dream—film school and a chance at a life beyond the one she ran from six months ago. But before she can become the girl she wants to be, she must deal with the girl she left behind.

Ronin is also chasing his dream—a family of his own and a life away from erotic modeling. And he too, has a past he’s trying to forget. A past that makes Rook question everything about their life together.

Lies, secrets, and shocking truths will rock the foundation Rook and Ronin have built. Can they put the past behind them and move forward together? Or is this just another too good to be true relationship that will crash and burn in the end?

I really liked the first two books in this trilogy. Rook and Ronin are all kinds of adorable and sweet together and I enjoyed getting into their story so much. I don't even know what I was expecting going into this one, but I do know that this book was just as great as the other two, which was awesome because goodness knows trilogies tend to end not-so-well sometimes.

Rook has grown so much as a character, it makes me proud. She was still her strong self in this one, but she was more open, too. She finally TELLS us things. And her friends things. Progress! As I said, her character growth was wonderful. And then there's Ronin, whom I love, and he was still his sweet, lovable self. He grew in this one, too, in that he understands Rook better now and took the time to TRY. He has been such a constant character--firmly RONIN, you know? It was nice to see him trying for Rook. Makes me feel all warm and fuzzy.

Ford! Now, Ford is my boy. I can't wait for his book, and he played a big part in this one, too. His friendship with Rook made me so happy. Even though I know Ford isn't exactly what I like to make him out to be in my head...I DON'T CARE, I LOVE HIM ANYWAYS. And then Spencer...he's just a cool dude and I like him. I'd totally be friends with him in real life.

As far as plot goes, this one was super interesting. I love how J.A. Huss expands on the story from the previous books in ways that I never in a million years could have guessed. There is such a small percentage of predictability in this book, if there even IS any predictability...I'm not even sure there is. But if there is, it's a very infinitesimal amount. So on top of being able to guess pretty much NOTHING, I did like where the story went, as well. We had these characters that had all these secrets and all these things going on in their lives...Panic took their story in a direction that I think was perfect. I truly enjoyed it.

The ending was nice. Rook and Ronin are fantastic and I'm sad their books are over. But J.A. Huss definitely gave me an ending that I can not only live with, but one that I liked. Plus, we have Ford's book coming up, which I legit cannot wait for. And I'm pretty sure Spencer's getting a book sometime, too. So excited for these things!

Overall, Panic is a great ending to a trilogy I enjoyed so much. Rook and Ronin's books may be over, but I am (obviously) looking forward to the spin-offs for the other characters I've grown to love so much in these books!

Top Ten Character Names I Love

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by The Broke and the Bookish!

I seriously love names. They're a big deal to me. Some of these on the list may not surprise you... ;)

Also, I didn't intend for all the names on this list to be male...but they are. Heh. I can't help it. Book boys have some darn good names.

Guy Chambers
Fire & Flood
I swear, this name is perfect for this guy (hehe) and I lovelovelove it!
Oh, and Guy Chambers is mine. Just so we're clear, here and now. :)

Santana
By the Time You Read This, I'll Be Dead
I don't even need a last name for him. He wormed his way into my heart regardless, and his name makes me smile.

Ash
Night World, No. 1 (Night World, #1-3)
From Daughters of Darkness, I'm pretty sure my favorite character in this series. I pretty much name everything Ash because I love it so much. Oh, and there's another Ash in the Strange Angels series by Lili St. Crow. I adore him, as well. But this Ash was in my heart first. Aaaaand, it should be mentioned that Lili St. Crow had some of the freaking best nicknames for her characters--Shanks, Dibs...gosh, I love those boys. Time for a re-read methinks...

Four
Divergent (Divergent, #1)
I KNOW what his real name is, but I prefer to call him Four. It's such a cool name. So cool, my badminton partner and I have named our team Team Four. BOOM.

Balthazar
Evernight (Evernight, #1)
He does have a last name, and I do know what it is (More), but I think it's awesome how he pulls of a name that most people would get picked on for, or NOT go by. They'd make up a cool nickname for themselves instead. But not good old Balty. (I realize that I just shortened his name...)

Levi
Fangirl
I have ALL THE FEELS for this boy, and I've always liked his name. Now it sets my heart all aflutter.

Avi
Ruined (How to Ruin, #1-3)
Another name that is incredibly PERFECT for the guy, and I LOVE it! And him. Oh, goodness I love him.

Rule
Rule (Marked Men, #1)
A badass name for a badass guy. 'Nuff said ;)

Dean Holder
Losing Hope (Hopeless, #2)
Just because I call him Giggle-Swoon doesn't mean I don't like his actual name. I just can't decide whether to call him Dean now or Holder, but it doesn't matter because my default is Holder, but that doesn't matter either because I go with Giggle-Swoon. So...heh...YAY FOR DEAN HOLDER

Dexter
This Lullaby
Ohhh, Dex...my boy. *no words*

*Honorable Mention*
Remington Tate
Real (Real, #1)
Goodness gracious, this guy. He has a great name. And he's a great character. Can I have Mine now, please? And Remy? I heart Remy.

I was going to put Augustus Waters on this list, too, but I feared I wouldn't be able to do that without crying all over my keyboard...

What do you think of my list? Like any of these names? Did you make your own list? Link me up!

Review: Trust in Me by J. Lynn

Trust in Me (Wait for You, #1.5)

Trust in Me by J. Lynn
Release Date: October 22, 2013
Format: eARC, 237 pages
Publisher: William Morrow Impulse
Series: Wait For You #1.5
Source: Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review

Description from Goodreads:
It’s Wait for You as you’ve never seen it. Trust in Me lets you in on Cam’s side of the #1 New York Times Bestselling story.

Cameron Hamilton is used to getting what he wants, especially when it comes to women. But when Avery Morgansten comes crashing into his life – literally – he finally meets the one person who can resist his soulful baby blues. But Cam’s not ready to give up. He can’t get the feisty and intriguing girl out of his head.

Avery has secrets, secrets that keep her from admitting the feelings Cam knows she has for him. Will persistence (and some delicious homemade cookies) help him break down her barriers and gain her trust? Or will he be shut out of Avery's life, losing his first real shot at the kind of love that lasts forever?

We all know I loved Wait For You. And that I love JLA. So I'm just going to tell you now: I loved Trust in Me. But as always, I have REASONS. Ready for 'em?

Cam has a great personality. Or, should I say, Jen did a great job writing Cam's personality. If Wait For You were to have been dual POV, it would have been super easy to tell whether it was him or Avery telling the story. He's so DIFFERENT from Avery, and I loved it. Avery had a serious outlook on things, and while Cam could totally take things serious when needed, he was mostly super entertaining. He had a fun mind.

Cam and his sweetness. Again, his mind. I loved being inside it. He was so sweet. Little did I know how much he called Avery "Shortcake" in his mind. Ha! Outwardly, Cam was sweet as tea in Wait For You, but it was cool to be inside his head and see it extend there, too. But it still wasn't TOO MUCH, either. Cam was still a guy. Obviously.

Cam's cookies. I actually have nothing to add on this. Just...those cookies. ;) *giggles*

Extra things. It was nice to see Cam when he WASN'T with Avery, too. When he talked with Ollie and Jase. In between what happened with Avery. That was also a great set up for what's going to happen in Be With Me--Jase and Teresa. It's going to be all kinds of awesome! And there were a few extras with Avery that I liked, too.

I pretty much just liked this whole book. Novella. Whatever.

BUT. This is definitely just something EXTRA. There's not a bunch of Cam-secrets in this one--it's not a NECESSARY read. If you liked Wait For You, then go for it! Read away. But if you're looking for a while different story all for Cam, then...nope. This is exactly what it says it is: Wait For You in Cam's POV. I loved it. I recommend it. But don't go in hoping for more than it is.

I actually thought there would be more extra things than there were. The story was great, the writing was fantastic, but there wasn't as much to this story as I thought there would be. Like I said, it's just something EXTRA. For those of us who love Cam.

Oh, and Trust in Me was definitely the perfect title for this! I love the perfection of those words.

Overall, Jen writes some darn good books. I'd say this one can be added to the long list of those. Cam is swoon-worthy, and I love him more than I did before (who'd of thought THAT was possible?). I can't wait to get more glimpses of Cam and Avery in Be With Me!

Review: Slammed by Colleen Hoover♥

Slammed (Slammed, #1)

Slammed by Colleen Hoover
Release Date: September 18, 2012
Format: Paperback, 317 pages
Publisher: Atria Books
Series: Slammed #1
Source: Library

Description from Goodreads:
Falling in love can feel like poetry. Or it can feel like a slam to the heart.

Colleen Hoover’s romantic, emotion-packed debut novel unforgettably captures all the magic and confusion of first love, as two young people forge an unlikely bond before discovering that fate has other plans for them.

Following the unexpected death of her father, eighteen-year-old Layken becomes the rock for both her mother and younger brother. She appears resilient and tenacious, but inside, she's losing hope. Then she meets her new neighbor Will, a handsome twenty-one-year-old whose mere presence leaves her flustered and whose passion for poetry slams thrills her.

Not long after a heart-stopping first date during which each recognizes something profound and familiar in the other, they are slammed to the core when a shocking discovery brings their new relationship to a sudden halt. Daily interactions become impossibly painful as they struggle to find a balance between the feelings that pull them together and the forces that tear them apart. Only through the poetry they share are they able to speak the truth that is in their hearts and imagine a future where love is cause for celebration, not regret.

"Sometimes life gets in your way.
It gets all up in your damn way."

THAT QUOTE. It is my favorite thing I've seen in a book in a while. Great enough to quote at the beginning of this review. And you know what, it is perfect for this book, too. Because that's what this book IS. Two people, trying to be happy as they live their lives, but life keeps getting in the way. Goodness gracious, this book.

I'm just going to declare it here and now: Colleen Hoover is the Queen of Feels.

Honestly, I will never know how she does it, but she writes the most beautiful stories. And you wanna know the kicker? I should have HATED this book. I should have despised how quickly Will and Lake's relationship grew, and I should have been bored as heck during all the times Will wasn't around. But you know what? Colleen Hoover rock this beach. (Imagine the curse word that would fit there...that's what I WANTED to say.)

Layken. Well, hmm. She wasn't perfect. But she WAS responsible and I liked that. I'm not going to say she never got on my nerves, because she definitely did, but it wasn't to the point that made me hate her. I didn't just tolerate her in this book. I think I kind of liked her. WHOA.

And then there is Will. Who I should have not liked. If he were to be in almost any other book, I'd be so bored with him. But Colleen Hoover...she wrote him right. He's responsible, but not a saint, either. But he is still a gentleman. He's nice, but not exactly a goody-goody. Wonderful balance going on with this character, and I adore him.

I can't think of a better author to have written this book. Aside from the I-should-have-hated-it thing, the POETRY in this book. It plays a big part, and Colleen Hoover...dang, y'all. She rocked it. So beautiful, but it didn't feel TOO fancy, either. I loved the poetry. And a lot of the time, the poetry in stories doesn't fly with me. It just doesn't work. But here.... It made the story better. It was well-written, but not to the point of seeming pretentious. It simply FIT into this story.

**Oh, and Lake's poem, "Schooled"? Yeah, well. It may or may not have made me cry. A little. Just saying.**

The awesome thing about this book is that it wasn't too surprising in plot, but I still devoured this thing as fast as I could in my free time. Which brings me back--again--to Colleen's writing. She has serious skill. I can't even describe it to you; it's something you have to experience yourself. But let me tell you THIS now: it is gorgeous.

Overall, this is another book by Colleen Hoover I ended up loving. She's turning into one of those authors I doubt has the ability to write a bad book. Seriously. She has SKILLS, people. You should check them out.

Top Ten Books I Was "Forced" To Read

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by The Broke and the Bookish!

Obsidian by Jennifer L. Armentrout
Obsidian (Lux, #1)
This will forever be my #1 on a list like this, because this was the most pleasant surprise of a book ever. I was forced by the blogosphere to read this book, but if we're being more specific Jana from The Book Goddess. I'd already had my eye on this book, but I most likely wouldn't have been one of the earlier (though not the earliest, sadly--I was late to the Covenant party, y'all) JLA fans. And trust me, a lot would be different now if that were the case. I'm pretty sure my blog would still be a tiny baby...this book set a lot of things in motion. I love this book, I love this series, and I love this author. Thank goodness I was "forced" into this book!

The Fault in Our Stars by John Green
The Fault in Our Stars
My friend Ana from my creative writing class last year forced this one on me. Literally. Brought in her copy to let me borrow and everything. So I took it home. And I read. And I cried. It was magnificent.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky
The Perks of Being a Wallflower
The same thing that happened with TFiOS happened with PERKS, except it was my friend Dolly from my creative writing class who brought this one on for me to borrow. And I took it home. And I read it. And I cried. And...FEELS. So many feels. <3 Fun fact: Dolly also let me borrow her DVD of PERKS. I cried watching that, too.

Saving Jessica by Lurlene McDaniel
Saving Jessica
My friend Ashley talked this one up to me, mostly because she had liked the book and my name...yeah. This was the book that started my love for Lurlene McDaniel books. The next ones she talked me into were the Angels trilogy, which make me so angry but I also think they're my favorite by her...I can't help it. It's Ethan.

The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton
The Outsiders
I was forced by my seventh grade English teacher to read this. It was required that year. It's my favorite book I've ever been required to read. I'm sure I've mentioned it before, but this is also the first book I ever remember crying for. Because, well...DALLY.

Night by Elie Wiesel
Night (The Night Trilogy, #1)
Goodness, this book. I was forced to read this by my English II teacher my freshman year of high school. More required reading. We had, like, two weeks to read this. I took it home the first weekend and finished it so quick...and of course I cried. How can someone read this book and not cry? Not even a little? I don't understand that.

My Super Sweet Sixteenth Century by Rachel Harris
My Super Sweet Sixteenth Century (My Super Sweet Sixteenth Century, #1)
Jana came through for me yet again on this one. She gave this to me for Christmas last year. This book is so awesome. And Rachel Harris is so freaking sweet. I simply MUST mention that. Oh, and I totally call dibs on Cip. He needs to get his own book in which he gets a girl named Jessica ;)

Hopeless by Colleen Hoover
Hopeless (Hopeless, #1)
Everyone forced me to read this one. Not by loving it or anything, but by writing such great spoiler-free reviews. I looked and looked for spoilers but found none. Ziltch. Nada. So I read it because I was so freaking curious. And you know what? I'm darn glad I did. I'm a Colleen Hoover fangirl for life. And can't forget good ole Giggle-Swoon.

Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead
Vampire Academy (Vampire Academy, #1)
My wonderful friends Katee and Hayley got into these books in middle school. After hearing them talk about these ones for years, I finally gave in and read the first one sophomore year. And then I finished the series within the next few months. (Not because I read slow, but because I had to wait in between books for them to be in at the library.) Now I'm all over Bloodlines and Adrian and all that wonderful vampire-ness.

If I Stay by Gayle Forman
If I Stay (If I Stay, #1)
Ashley got me to read this one, too. Ashley was actually my go-to source for books that freaking rocked in middle school. She let me borrow her copies and everything. This one was included. Obviously I loved it. Adam Wilde, people. Hellloooooo.

What do you think of my list? Are there any books you've been "forced" to read? If you made a list, link me up!

SEVEN DAY FIANCE Synopsis:

Angelle Prejean is in a pickle. Her family is expecting her to come home with a fiancé—a fiancé who doesn’t exist. Well, he exists, but he definitely has no idea Angelle told her mama they were engaged. Tattooed, muscled, and hotter than sin, Cane can reduce Angelle to a hot mess with one look—and leave her heart a mess if she falls for him. But when she ends up winning Cane at a charity bachelor auction, she knows just how to solve her fiancé problem.

Cane Robicheaux is no one’s prince. He doesn’t do relationships and he doesn’t fall in love. When sweet, sultry-voiced Angelle propositions him, he hopes their little game can finally get her out of his head. He doesn’t expect her to break through all his barriers. But even as Angelle burrows deeper into his heart, he knows once their seven days are up, so is their ruse.

Rachel Harris Bio:

Rachel Harris grew up in New Orleans, where she watched soap operas with her grandmother and stayed up late sneak reading her mama’s favorite romance novels. Now a Cajun cowgirl living in Houston, she still stays up way too late reading her favorite romances, only now, she can do so openly. She firmly believes life’s problems can be solved with a hot, powdered-sugar-coated beignet or a thick slice of king cake, and that screaming at strangers for cheap, plastic beads is acceptable behavior in certain situations.

When not typing furiously or flipping pages in an enthralling romance, she homeschools her two beautiful girls and watches reality television with her amazing husband. Taste The Heat is her adult romance debut. She’s the author of MY SUPER SWEET SIXTEENTH CENTURY and A TALE OF TWO CENTURIES. She loves hearing from readers! Find her atwww.RachelHarrisWrites.com.
